## Caption

On January 24, 1848, which is 178 years ago today, James Marshall changed the the course of human events when he found gold at Sutter’s Mill 40 east of present-day Sacramento. This would lead to the California Gold Rush and Sacramento grew as the closest major city to the gold fields and was a transportation hub for steamboats and stage lines transporting gold seekers and supplies. 

For today, Jared discussed Marshall finding gold and how newspapers were responsible for spreading that news while letterpress printing a halftone copy of a lithograph that illustrated Sacramento at the time of the Gold Rush. This print depicts a street scene in 1854. This was printed with purple oil base ink using our Washington hand press.
