Everyone’s shooting the same game.
Here’s how I learned to separate myself.

When you’re surrounded by other photographers, it’s easy to think the difference comes down to gear, access, or talent.

Most of the time, it doesn’t.

What separates people usually shows up in the moments around the action — not during it.

I stopped chasing the exact same play everyone else was pointed at and started paying attention to what was being ignored. The reaction after the whistle. The body language on the sideline. The moment a player realizes what just happened.

I also stopped overshooting. Firing through every play felt productive, but it made my work messier and my decisions slower. Waiting for moments forced me to be intentional, and intention shows up in the final images.

Another thing that mattered more than I expected was finishing the story. A lot of photographers pack up once the game’s decided. I stayed. Post-game emotion, handshakes, celebrations — those moments often say more than the score.

And honestly, the biggest difference wasn’t even in the photos. It was in how I operated. Staying calm. Moving with purpose. Being predictable in a good way. Making it easy for people to trust me on the sideline.

Everyone has access to the same game.
Not everyone tells a different story.
