The Oglala Sioux Tribe Tribal Council formally rejects ICE agreement and bans ICE from Pine Ridge.

During a special meeting on January 21, the Oglala Sioux Tribal Council confirmed that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement had asked President Frank Star Comes Out to enter the Oglala Sioux tribe into Section 287(g) — a federal agreement that would have deputized tribal law enforcement to act as immigration agents for ICE.

The Council unanimously passed two separate motions: to formally reject any Section 287(g) agreement, and to ban all ICE agents and activities from the Pine Ridge Reservation.

Before the vote, Council Member Anna Halverson publicly praised Tribal President Frank Star Comes Out for refusing the agreement, citing concerns over sovereignty, jurisdiction, and the unlawful application of immigration authority to U.S. citizens.

Now, Tribal President Frank Star Comes Out is expected to issue a public notice enforcing the ban, while the Tribe awaits further updates regarding three Oglala Sioux tribal members reportedly detained at Fort Snelling.
