Remember “One Dance” by the Seoul Metropolitan Dance Company that totally wowed New York?

The choreographers behind it — Kim Sung-hoon, Kim Jae-duck, and Jung Hye-jin — just won Best Choreographer / Creator at the Bessie Awards, often called the Oscars of dance 🏆

What makes this even crazier? This is the first time ever a Korean work — and Korean choreographers — have taken home a Bessie Award.

“One Dance” is a modern reinterpretation of the ritual dance from Jongmyo Jeryeak, a Korean National Intangible Cultural Heritage and a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

It blends tradition with contemporary movement so beautifully — you can really feel the elegance, restraint, and power of Korean dance in every step.

이 작품의 안무를 맡은 김성훈, 김재덕, 정혜진 안무가가 무용계의 오스카상으로 불리는 베시 어워드에서 ‘최우수 안무가·창작자상’을 수상했습니다 🏆

베시 어워드는 1984년 제정된 권위 있는 무용상으로, 뉴욕에서 한 해 동안 선보인 공연 중 가장 혁신적인 작품을 선정해 시상하는데요. 한국 작품, 그리고 한국 무용가가 이 상을 받은 것은 이번이 최초라는 점에서 더욱 의미가 큽니다.

〈일무〉는 제1호 국가무형문화재이자 유네스코 세계인류무형유산인 종묘제례악의 의식무를 현대적으로 재해석한 작품입니다. 한국 전통의 정신성과 함께, 한국 무용 특유의 아름다운 선과 절제된 움직임을 깊이 있게 느낄 수 있죠.
