Bruce Prichard addressed the rumors regarding The Great Muta potentially joining the WWF in early 2001 following the expiration of his WCW contract. On the latest episode of Something To Wrestle With, Prichard confirmed that the company explored the possibility.

“There were discussions. I mean, there were definitely discussions,” Prichard stated. “I think [Muta] was an extraordinary talent. I thought he was absolutely amazing back in the day.”

Prichard explained the hurdles that prevented a deal, citing the need for management. “One of the, you know, stumbling blocks was, you know, [Muta] couldn’t cut a promo,” Prichard admitted. “He needed a manager, and he needed someone to kind of handle him and travel with him and help him along the way.”

Prichard recalled an interaction at a WCW house show in New Haven where manager Gary Hart intervened when Prichard and Pat Patterson approached Muta. “As soon as I got close to him, Gary Hart came running... Gary was on top of him. [Muta] was very, very protected,” Prichard said.

Prichard suggested the negotiations may have been leverage for Muta in Japan. “New Japan, I truly believe that New Japan was kind of in the folks in Japan in general were putting all of this out there to make him more valuable at home,” Prichard said.
