Adrian Gonzales, a former Uvalde school district police officer, was found not guilty by a jury of his conduct during the Robb Elementary mass shooting. The verdict was delivered on Wednesday evening, January 21, 2026, at the Nueces County Courthouse in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Gonzales stood trial for more than two weeks, accused by prosecutors of failing to act immediately to stop a gunman who burst into the Uvalde elementary school on the morning of May 24, 2022, killing 19 children and wounding 10 other students. Two teachers were also killed in the shooting. The jury rejected 29 counts of abandoning or endangering a child that had been filed against him.

The trial was moved to Corpus Christi after Gonzales’s attorneys argued that it would be difficult to find an impartial jury in Uvalde, which is approximately 200 miles away.

On the day of the shooting, nearly 400 law enforcement officers from various agencies, including the Border Patrol and the Texas Department of Public Safety, responded to the emergency at Robb Elementary. Gonzales was one of the first officers on scene and one of only two law enforcement officers charged in connection with the police response.

The other officer facing criminal charges is former Uvalde school district police chief Pedro “Pete” Arredondo, who faces 10 counts of abandoning or endangering a child, one for each of the 10 children who suffered physical or psychological injuries in the massacre. Arredondo, who was the presumed incident commander overseeing the police response, is scheduled to stand trial at a later date.

You can read more about how the trial unfolded at expressnews. I covered many days of the trial as the only still photographer in the courtroom. I’ve been covering the aftermath of the Uvalde school shooting since the beginning. It’s an immense privilege, but it’s been so heavy to watch families of victims and survivors relive the pain of this tragedy every day.
