❄️ Winter weather brings beauty. It also brings risk.

During winter months, emergency departments consistently see a significant increase in fall-related injuries, including traumatic brain injuries. Icy sidewalks, snow-covered steps, and hidden black ice make falls more likely. Falls are already the leading cause of TBI in the United States, Falls are the leading cause of traumatic brain injury in the United States, accounting for nearly half of TBI-related hospitalizations.

Each year, millions of Americans experience a brain injury. Many of these injuries occur during colder months and are preventable. Older adults are especially vulnerable, but slippery surfaces put people of all ages at risk. Even a single fall can lead to a concussion, brain bleed, or long-term cognitive and physical challenges.

At the Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute, we see the impact of brain injury every day. We also know that prevention matters.

This winter, take a few extra steps to protect yourself and those you love.
✔️ Wear shoes with good traction
✔️ Use handrails when available
✔️ Walk slowly and deliberately on icy surfaces
✔️ Check on older family members and neighbors

Behind every statistic is a person, a family, and a journey toward recovery. Awareness and prevention can make all the difference.
