LIONS STORM INTO SOCAL CHAMPS TITLE GAME: The jserra.gwp team completed a remarkable second half comeback to reach the title game of the SoCal Championships on Saturday, as the Lions rallied from a five-goal deficit on three separate occasions to defeat the Corona Del Mar Sea Queens 11-8 in the semifinals round at Corona Del Mar High School in Newport Beach.

The Lions are now 16-7 overall and will take on Trinity League rival Orange Lutheran in the championship game scheduled for 3:00 pm

After each team claimed one-goal head-to-head victories against each other earlier this season, the third battle between the Lions and Sea Queens appeared headed for a more decisive outcome.

Corona Del Mar held JSerra scoreless in the first period and stormed out to a 5-0 lead by quarter’s end.

Senior Kamryn McCord and sophomore Aubrey Cardoza each tallied a goal in the second period, but JSerra still trailed 7-2 at the intermission.

The Lions roared back into the game in the third period behind a rejuvenated offense attack and a re-energized defensive effort.

McCord and Cardoza each scored their second goals of the game to cut the deficit to 7-4 with 2:52 remaining in the period.

Senior Sloane Paulson found the back of the net twice in a 39-second burst later in the period to bring the Lions to within 7-6.

Senior Maddie Weston knotted the contest at 7-7 with 46 seconds remaining in the period with a score off an assist by McCord.

JSerra’s dominant wave of momentum continued into the final period.

Freshman Skylar Shim gave the Lions their first lead of the game with 6:19 remaining, as she lobbed a shot into the goal to make it 8-7.

Weston added her second score off an assist by freshman Dani Ku to push the Lions’ advantage to 9-7 with 5:44 left.

Cardoza capped a 9-0 second half scoring outburst with back-to-back goals in a 43-second span to help seal the comeback triumph for the Lions.
