LANCERS OUTLAST LIONS FOR SOCAL CHAMPIONSHIPS TITLE: The jserra.gwp team and the Orange Lutheran Lancers squared off for the SoCal Championships title on Saturday, with the Lancers pulling out a hard-fought 13-8 win over the Lions at Corona del Mar High School in Newport Beach.

JSerra is now 16-8 overall.

The two league combatants met for the second time in three days and it was a tense affair throughout.

JSerra jumped out to a 3-0 lead less than five minutes into the opening period, as senior Maddie Weston scored twice (assisted by freshman Dani Ku and senior Kamryn McCord respectively) and senior Sloane Paulson added a score on a counterattack following a steal.

The Lancers answered with three goals in a 1:30 span late in the period to tie the game, but junior Kylin Barnes found the back of the net with four seconds remaining off a pass from sophomore Aubrey Cardoza to give the Lions a 4-3 lead after one quarter.

The Lancers scored three times in the second period to take a 6-4 lead at halftime.

McCord converted a five-meter score to narrow the lead to one with 5:39 left in the third period.

Orange Lutheran scored the final two goals of the period to take an 8-5 advantage into the final quarter.

Paulson’s second goal of the game with 5:55 remaining and junior Victoria Williams’ shot clock beating laser into the net 50 seconds later brought the Lions back to within a goal at 8-7.

Orange Lutheran pushed the lead back to two with 2:30 left, but Cardoza answered with her lone score of the game 52 seconds later to trim the deficit back to one at 9-8.

But Orange Lutheran held JSerra off the scoreboard the rest of the way and added four straight goals (including a cluster of empty net scores in the closing seconds) to thwart the Lions’ comeback attempt and clinch the tournament crown.
