⚓️💙Ruth E. Carter, a Hampton University alumna, has cemented her place in Academy history as the most Oscar-nominated Black woman ever. She recently earned her fifth nomination for Best Costume Design for Sinners, adding to her career that includes Oscar wins for Black Panther and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, along
with earlier nominations for Malcolm X and Amistad.

Carter’s journey began at Hampton University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Theater Arts in 1982 from what was then the Hampton Institute. Her early passion for costume design flourished through her work in the campus costume shop, laying the foundation for a career that would break barriers in Hollywood. But this isn’t the first time Carter made history.

In 1993, she became the first Black costume designer ever nominated in the Best Costume Design category at the Academy Awards for her groundbreaking work on Malcolm X.
