The National Civil Rights Museum was built to ensure that the lessons, sacrifices, and victories of the past are never forgotten, and always guide our future. We are more than a museum. We are a national institution dedicated to education, justice, and truth.

In May 2026, we are unveiling a bold new chapter with the reopening of The Legacy, but it’s more than exhibit galleries. It’s a reflection of us.

As we reimagine this pivotal exhibit, we are committed to capturing the stories of everyday people whose actions advanced the Civil Rights Movement, community organizers, teachers, workers, students, and families whose names may not appear in textbooks, but whose courage helped change the world. This is about ensuring that the everyday stories of struggle, sacrifice, and resilience are preserved and elevated. Our stories, our museum.

From local organizers to students, educators, artists, and families—our community’s stories are the next chapter of history. The conversations we have, the protests we lead, the policies we shape—these are the living echoes of the movement. Our lived experiences today are the lessons that will shape the next generation’s understanding of justice.

This powerful new experience will explore five key pillars drawn from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s prophetic book, "Where Do We Go from Here: Chaos or Community?"
