Design@Large: Design to Action — Session 1 (PATH)
Paving the Path: How do people take early ideas, find direction, and spark momentum through catalytic conversations and experiments? That question sparked conversation in the room with us on Wednesday, January 14th, at the first #DesignAtLarge of the Winter Quarter, hosted by the #DesignLab. 

The first steps of any project can feel the most challenging, so with that in mind, we launched into exploring how design begins and how #DesignLeadership often shows up before there’s certainty.

What became apparent through these conversations was how ‘beginning’ on a path wasn’t framed as a clean starting line, but as an exploration of possibility. Katalina Silva (@katalina.silva, @helloenigma) spoke about alignment being something you feel your way into by collaborative discourse between people and sometimes between borders, until the work starts to point back. Kamaal Martin (@artpowerequity) grounded momentum in belief and community, the kind that grows when people decide together that something is worth designing for. And David Graham reminded us that early decisions don’t come with certainty; sometimes you act and adjust as you find your way forward inside real systems.

The idea that “you don’t need to wait for complete clarity to start, you build it through action” echoed through the room, especially in how experimentation showed up not as risk-taking or failure, but as a commitment to creation and finding what works. 

This conversation didn’t try to wrap anything up, it opened the door and invited everyone to take the first step on the path of #designtoaction
