Naomi Ohman and Cynthia Osterling are the recipients of the Spirit of the Loppet Excellence Award! At the 24 Hours of Wirth Race this past February, both women skied a total of 253km (more than 5 skate Birkies!), with Cynthia finishing the distance in 23:47:23 and Naomi right on her heels at 23:48:06. After the race was over, we were informed that Cynthia and Naomi had set a new American women’s record for distance skied in 24 hours!
.
Naomi is a senior at Orono High School, where she was a captain of the Nordic Team this season, and qualified for state. She says, “I am blessed with an amazing team and coaches, and the Loppet Foundation provides a beautiful and accessible venue to train at. Loppet programming brings our city together to experience nature by appealing to everyone while encouraging them to step out of their comfort zones, and 24 Hours of Wirth is just one of those options (for those of us who are a bit nuts).”
.
“It was a lot of fun to be neck and neck with Cynthia and have a reason to keep going in the hardest hours. The new Trailhead building also provides a place where people can gather, which made it possible for friends and family to come spectate and stay warm in between laps. All in all it was an amazing experience and I couldn't have done it without all the volunteers and friends and family who helped!“
.
Cynthia is a long-time Loppet volunteer and has trained extensively with both LNR Monday Night Women’s Group and the Loppet Run Club. She says, “Thanks to the Loppet team for giving me the opportunity to do something I never dreamed I could do! As an adult, I find it so special and energizing to have new adventures and even more unique to learn after the fact about setting a national record. 24 Hours of Wirth was a day of highs and lows beginning with pulling my first all-nighter in years. It was a unique adventure in which I experienced the incredible support of the Loppet community throughout.” .
"Shoutout to my friends in the Loppet Run Club and coach Dave Bitner, to the women in my LNR ski group and coach Bethann Chamberlain, to everyone on the trails that day who cheered us on, and to Naomi who inspired me to keep skiing!”
