LIONS HAND EAGLES FIRST LOSS: The jserra.girlssoccer team knocked rival Santa Margarita from the ranks of the unbeaten on Tuesday with an impressive 2-0 road triumph over the Eagles at Santa Margarita Catholic High School in Rancho Santa Margarita. 

JSerra’s first league victory improved their overall record to 6-3-2, while handing Santa Margarita (the top-ranked team in the state by MaxPreps) its first loss in 16 matches this season.

Freshmen goalie Kaelyn Vignoni anchored the Lions defensive effort in the first half with five saves.

The Lions found offensive momentum later in the half, as sophomore Kaylee Hanna, junior G.G. Szczuka, and sophomore Morgan Woolforde each put quality shots on frame.

JSerra’s attack yielded the first goal of the match in the 34th minute, as Hanna found found an opening in the Eagles defense and sent a great through ball to an open Szczuka, who served a shot into the far post corner of the goal to make it 1-0. 

Hanna and Szczuka struck again in the 44th minute to increase the lead, with Hanna serving a cross from the right side into the box for Szczuka, who knocked the ball into the net with her hip.

JSerra’s defense did the rest to close out the triumph and become the first team this season to hold the Eagles scoreless.
