In the earliest days of Hollywood, the few roles offered to Black actors were overwhelmingly confined to slavery and degrading stereotypes, characters stripped of dignity, complexity, and humanity. These portrayals reinforced harmful narratives rather than reflecting real lives. Over time, through resistance, talent, and perseverance, Black artists began to claim space for fuller stories, roles that explored love, intellect, vulnerability, joy, and contradiction.
