On this day in 1951, John Wayne took command of the submarine adventure Operation Pacific, portraying Lt. Cmdr. Duke E. Gifford. The film features real submarine footage and technical advice from Admiral Charles A. Lockwood of the Submarine Force Pacific. 

This was Duke’s undersea war film—a departure from his typical Westerns—and his 12th collaboration with Ward Bond.
