We’re continuing our 75th anniversary celebration with another unforgettable community story! This time, from someone who grew up with the Museum woven into her earliest memories. 🥹

Jeannine Perrot, daughter of former CMoG Director Paul N. Perrot, remembers visiting the exhibit hall in the mid‑1960s and encountering an object that felt larger than life: our 200-inch Hale Telescope mirror blank.

“Entering the dark exhibit hall that featured the bright yellow telescope mirror… there was an aura of awe and silence in that black, velvety space. I know we had to whisper and walk quietly. I didn’t understand what I was looking at. I thought the bright yellow honeycomb structure with the central glory hole was where people died and went to heaven. I thought it was a very scary place. It was only years later that I learned it was, at the time, the largest single piece of glass ever made.”

Today, the mirror blank remains a symbol of bold innovation, monumental ambition, and the many
stories that shaped both the Museum and our community.

And next week, we’re taking that story even further! 🔭 Join us for a special Connected by Glass event all
about the Hale Telescope mirror blank, featuring Cornell Assistant Professor of Astronomy Dr. Anna Ho. Happening February 5, 2026 from 6-7 pm at the Museum. 🌟
