🌍 From Davos to Riyadh — two new partnerships are advancing global cooperation in space.

The UNOOSA team is just back from the Space Debris Conference in Riyadh, hosted by saudispace.sa, where we joined global leaders to tackle one of the most urgent challenges in space: debris.

🚨 “Space debris is not a background risk — it’s becoming a structural feature of the space environment,” said Director Holla-Maini. “It will determine who can operate safely, at what cost, and under what conditions.”

She shared a stark reality:

🛰️ In just 6 months in 2024, six major debris events occurred across LEO, HEO, and GEO — generating thousands of fragments.

📡 Near-misses in low Earth orbit are rising fast, testing our ability to coordinate and respond.

🌍 On Earth, space data continues to save lives: most recently, in Southern Africa and Morocco, where UNOOSA supported access to satellite imagery for flood response.

❗ “It has become a governance issue,” she noted. “Will national regulation, commercial incentives and international norms keep pace with this dangerous reality?”

✅ While in Riyadh, UNOOSA signed a new Memorandum of Cooperation with the Saudi Space Agency to advance debris mitigation and responsible space operations.

We also highlighted progress under the COPUOS Working Group on the Long-Term Sustainability of Outer Space Activities — including work on SSA, in-orbit servicing, and LEO safety.

📍 And just last week at the World Economic Forum in Davos, UNOOSA signed a Declaration of Intent with Pahang Aerospace City to support Malaysia’s Space City initiative — an ambitious hub for the space and aerospace industry aiming to embed governance, capacity-building, and inclusive space principles from the outset. We look forward to exploring further cooperation on space policy, capacity-building, and knowledge exchange to help advance the local space economy.

📢 2026 is already off to a strong start — and there’s more ahead. Follow us next week for updates from STSC 2026!
