Watching winter sports gets so much better when you know the competition’s ins and outs ⛷️ ⬇️

.) Cross-country skiing is one of the oldest winter sports in the world, dating back thousands of years. It originally developed as a way for people to travel and hunt in snowy regions, with roots tracing to Norway before becoming an Olympic event. 🏔️

.) Meet the athletes– lojortberg, aka LoJo, is headed to her first-ever Olympics after shining at Dartmouth with five podium finishes and two wins. juliakernski, a sprint specialist, two-time World Champ medalist, and Olympian who already knows how to show up on the world’s biggest stage. 🌟

.) The sport is divided into two techniques: Classic and freestyle. Classic is similar to running, where athletes stride along the course, and freestyle more closely resembles skating, using a push out-and-glide motion. The 10km + 10km Skiathlon is the only event that combines both techniques. 👀

.) The most-decorated U.S. cross-country skier is hanging up her boots– jessiediggins is one of the most accomplished U.S. cross-country skiers in history and will compete in her fourth (and final) Winter Olympic Games in 2026, with the 10km freestyle shaping up to be her signature event. 🎿

.) Cross-country skiing is often called a Swiss Army knife sport. It requires full-body strength, endurance, balance, and strategy, engaging nearly every muscle group while pushing athletes both physically and mentally. 😮‍💨
