After 31 seasons of coaching Cal field hockey, head coach Shellie Onstead announced her retirement last Friday.

As just the second head coach in program history, Onstead has accumulated more than 300 career wins, 14 conference titles and six NCAA tournament runs. In her tenure, she has led the program to a program-high national ranking of No. 11 in 2011 — most recently breaking through to No. 19 last season — and has coached nine All-Americans.

Onstead’s journey with the Bears didn’t begin there, though. Originally from San Jose, she attended UC Davis as a field hockey student-athlete before eventually transferring to UC Berkeley after her freshman year in fall 1980. Even as a player, she was a pillar of the community, being the program’s first First-Team All-American in 1982. Onstead helped lead the team to a 1980 Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women runner-up finish and top-five national finishes over the next two years.
