In 1996, @deftones opened for KISS on many North American dates of the band's Alive/Worldwide reunion tour. Despite Deftones popularity as a pivotal nu-metal 90s band, the two bands had little fan overlap.⁠ ⁠ At one show on the tour, KISS fans booed Deftones after they had finished a song. To respond, lead singer Chino Moreno cheekily replied, "The coolest thing about this: your kid's gonna go home and buy our record, and you have to pay for it.
