Constitution Day has officially been designated as a public holiday again 🇰🇷

Constitution Day marks July 17, 1948—the day South Korea’s Constitution was first proclaimed, and the starting point of the country’s democracy and rule of law.

It used to be a public holiday, but after the five-day workweek was introduced in 2004 and the total number of holidays increased, it was removed from the list in 2008 due to concerns over productivity. Now, about 18 years later, it’s finally been reinstated as a public holiday.

Rather than seeing Constitution Day as just a day off, it’s worth remembering what it really stands for:
- the starting point of Korean democracy and the rule of law
- the day the Constitution, which defines citizens’ rights and duties, was established

Along with Liberation Day, March 1st Movement Day, National Foundation Day, and Hangeul Day, Constitution Day is a key part of Korea’s national identity.

Now feels like the perfect time to pause and reflect on its meaning.

제헌절은 1948년 7월 17일, 대한민국 헌법이 처음 공포된 날로 국가의 근간이 되는 민주주의와 법치주의의 출발점을 기념하는 날이에요.

한때는 공휴일이었지만, 2004년 주 5일 근무제 도입으로 휴일 수가 늘면서 기업 생산성 저하 등을 이유로 2008년부터는 휴일에서 제외됐죠. 이번 재지정을 통해 약 18년 만에 다시 공휴일로 돌아오게 됐습니다.

제헌절은 단순한 ‘쉬는 날’이 아니라
- 한국 민주주의와 법치의 출발점
- 국민의 권리와 의무를 규정한 헌법 제정 기념일
