Millions of Ohioans don’t know they’re breathing air poisoned by radon — an invisible, odorless gas lurking in roughly half of Ohio homes. Linked to lung cancer, radon kills 21,000 Americans every year and causes more than 2,500 cases in Ohio alone.

Despite knowing the risks since the 1980s, lawmakers have failed to require testing or fund mitigation, leaving families vulnerable. An eight-month investigation from The Enquirer's sister paper columbusdispatch found dangerous radon levels in an estimated 50% of homes in Ohio and 40% of homes in Kentucky.

While other states mandate testing in schools and offer financial help, Ohio ranks among the worst states for radon testing.
