🚀 #COPUOS2026 is officially underway! At the opening of the 63rd session of the Scientific and Technical Subcommittee, Chair Pakorn Apaphant of 🇹🇭Thailand welcomed our 110 Member States, including our six latest additions:
🇨🇮Côte d'Ivoire
🇬🇲The Gambia
🇭🇳Honduras
🇲🇻Maldives
🇲🇹Malta
🇿🇼Zimbabwe

In her opening remarks, Director Aarti Holla-Maini spotlighted UNOOSA's major 2025 milestones:

🛰️ A record-breaking 2,636 objects registered in the UN Register of Objects Launched into Outer Space

🚀The launch of the new Registration Toolkit to help States comply with space object registration

⚖️Tailored space law advisory missions delivered to 🇹🇭Thailand, 🇬🇭Ghana, 🇸🇬Singapore, and 🇻🇳Viet Nam under the Global Space Law Project

🤝 Across the UN system, UNOOSA collaborated with:
 — ITU (ituofficial) on a satellite lifecycle workshop
 — UNEP (unep) to understand the environmental impact of space activities
 — UNIDIR (un_disarmresearch) to brief Geneva diplomats on the work of COPUOS

🌊 Plus, UN-SPIDER began to play a larger role in UN emergency response efforts, responding to severe flooding in 🇯🇲 Jamaica & 🇱🇰 Sri Lanka and earthquakes in 🇲🇲 Myanmar & 🇦🇫 Afghanistan.

Two high-level side events added to the day:
🛰️ “Shaping the Future of International Norms for Space Debris” brought together astroscale, jaxajp, spacegovuk & the National Space Policy Secretariat to explore responsible debris mitigation.

✈️ “Promoting the Airspace Integration of Space Activities” featured icao, the 🇦🇺australianspaceagency, 🇨🇦 Canada & 🇬🇧UK Dept of Transport (transportgovuk) on managing shared skies between aviation and space.

🌐 And a big milestone: UNOOSA + ICAO updated and renewed their cooperation mechanism to specifically address the integration of space transport operations into airspace. This will help ensure launches & re-entries are managed safely & efficiently, through better communication, coordination, and real-time airspace management, paving the way for a future where aviation and space activities are seamlessly integrated.

And that’s just Day 1. 👀
