Join us for a look at HerStory, a highlight of history making women in the Southern Region this month. Black history is not confined to the past—it is written every day, and for 100 years, the Southern Region has helped write that story. Join us on the road to 100.

Today’s HerStory honors the powerful legacy of Rutha Mae Harris of the Albany GA Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She is a civil rights icon, Freedom Singer, and living testament to the courage, faith, and determination that fueled the movement. From leading freedom songs before 250,000 people at the 1963 March on Washington to traveling thousands of miles to raise awareness, funds, and hope, Harris used her voice as a weapon against fear and injustice. Her story reminds us that music was more than melody—it was resistance, unity, and strength—and that the struggle for freedom is a constant one. As we reflect on our history and press forward with purpose, we celebrate those who sang, marched, organized, and refused to be silent, lighting the way for generations to come.
