#SaturdayStorytime - TYR Cup Chaos
I love the TYR Cup. It’s a competition style that really stretches your brain strategically and people push their limits for each other on a team.
Also Huntington beach is rad and whenever we go somewhere cool I try to bring the family along. The last two years I combined the stress of being a team captain with beautiful family chaos for the weekend. Hijinx ensued…
In 2024 children’s jet lag was our biggest rival. Both boys came and were up each morning at 4am, which is a bummer when the competition takes place from 7-9pm each night 😂. Parent life 🤘🏻. A couple mornings we just let Owen watch TV while we got another hour of sleep. Don’t judge me.
The late schedule had mworkunhill doing lots of solo bed times, she caught 70% of events from a laptop (#hero). Saturday evening coming back from the venue I had a text from her asking to get fresh bedding and towels on the way in. I asked how many. “All of them…”. Yikes. Turns out Ethan thew up all over the crib. Then our bed. Then on the carpet. Then proceeded to exorcist puke all over the room 🤢. It was a crime scene. Puke whack a mole. We spent the next 2h cleaning and apologizing to the staff.
On Sunday we had important points to win and the first event was sandy delivery on the beach, a strategic nightmare. We crushed and I was super relieved. It set us up well for the finish. At this age the kids don’t really know or care what’s going on in the competition but can recognize that dad is leaving for large chunks of the day and they’d had enough.
I came back to the room to shower afterwards and when I got out I found that Owen had taken a 💩 right on top of my shoe. A brilliant act of rebellion. He saw me pick up those shoes and leave for the day 3 days in a row and he’d had enough. Soiling the symbol of my absence. He stood right next to it, no sign of remorse. Kids are brilliant.
Obviously that went straight into the team chat
to boost morale and we took home the win fuelled by Owen’s comedic timing.
Sleep deprivation training paid off. Shoutout Michelle who is a rockstar. I wish I could say 2025 was an easier ride but it wasn’t. A story for another day…
