Syncopation is a musical technique where emphasis is placed on unexpected beats or rhythms, creating a feel of off-beat or surprising accents.

In this scene, keyboard player kwame__yeboah and I are working through the syncopated rhythm of the keyboard part on the track ‘Touch My Soul’.

In most Western music, rhythm typically emphasizes the “strong” beats (like the first and third in a four-beat measure). But in syncopated music, emphasis shifts to weaker beats (like the second and fourth) or even to the spaces in between, which can create a sense of tension, groove, or “swing.”

As usual, we’re slowing things right down - giving Kwame the opportunity to start to embody the relationship to the music through his instrument.

Slowing things down is a technique I learned from Miles Davies and how he works with new musicians. It’s about coming into a deeper state of presence, allowing musicians to feel into the spaces between the notes as much as the notes themselves. In a syncopated rhythm - this deep understanding becomes even more crucial to mastery of the groove.

Comment “STREAM” and I’ll send you a link to listen to or download the album featuring this track ‘Touch My Soul’.
