There are those who misconceive the craft of percussion.

Here is my truth - percussion is not just the final sprinkling on a near-complete track. For me, percussion is the foundation, the heartbeat of the rhythm itself. 

I am constantly exploring new ways to give life to that rhythm. 

Here you can see me sharing our percussionist Satin how to express an element of the ‘Touch My Soul’ record in a live performance environment on the tambourine - played with a stick. 

This is not a way that people normally play it, it’s something I started experimenting with on stage with Jamiroquai over the years after being taught the technique by an lppercussion legend Ralph McDonald. 

It gives a new feel to the sound of the tambourine, driving the upper register and creating a more urgent vibration that has real movement to it.

It’s more than “just” beats. Percussion brings dynamism and soul to the music, creating a pulse that everyone feels.
