Backing vocals are a hugely important part of my musical arrangement.

I see them as more than just additional voices, they are reflections and extensions of the lead vocals. Yes, each singer is invited to bring their own unique voice and personality - but there must be true synergy between us all in order for the vocal section to really come alive.

In this scene, you see me initiating the backing singers into the rhythmic template of my music. It is not a template that many people are used to as it is very culturally specific to the Yoruba drum patterns as well as my own passion for the form and structure of classical music.

I want us to find that place where we come into sync as singers without the drums, simply within the rhythm of the words themselves.

How can we find that pulse innately so that when the drums do come back in, there can be more freedom to play and express because the rhythm is actually embodied now?

Not just an external reference point but an internal one.

‘Touch My Soul’ - the single from the upcoming album ‘How Should I: Part I’ - is out now 🎶💫
