Most people patch their aging driveways. Kim Dinan cut hers into pieces and turned it into habitat.⁠

 “I could feel the earth suffocated underneath this driveway,” she says. “It felt like my calling to free it of this toxic crap that had been on top of it for 40 years.”⁠
⁠
Inspired by Depave (depavepdx), the Portland-based group whose work has sparked a depaving movement across North America, armed with a handheld concrete saw, Kim, her husband, and a group of friends (lured by pizza and beer) pried each slab free.⁠
⁠
A local company, Gardens of Eatin’, designed the new space.  Now, Passiflora and coral honeysuckle vines draw hummingbirds into the garden. Coneflowers, bee balm, yarrow, and other perennials host bees and swallowtail butterflies. And the humans get to enjoy fresh vegetables.⁠

Asphalt can run 40 to 60 degrees hotter than the air, contributing to extreme heat. Depaving projects at schools, churches, parks, and other community spaces aim to shift that reality—one slab at a time.⁠
