The practice of contemporary gardening wouldn’t exist without the ideas of landscape architects and imaginers—and Edna Walling is certainly one of those brilliant minds. Edna Walling (1895–1973) was an early 20th-century landscape architect, memorable for her enchanting gardens across Australia. Walling’s work, which was impacted by many significant periods throughout history, has made a lasting impression on the gardeners of today. So, what made Walling’s designs so spectacular?

🌱 Simplicity and Functionality – Walling believed in using a limited palette of plants and materials to create her cohesive and idyllic gardens. Each element of her gardens served a purpose, and she avoided clutter, leaving the spotlight to the natural beauty of the landscapes.

🪨 Structural Elements – Something that Walling was well-known for was her use of stone in garden structures such as walls, steps, and pathways. She believed that stone added a timeless quality to gardens and helped anchor them with the landscape. Walling also integrated structures like pergolas, arches, and garden houses into her designs, enhancing the garden’s functionality while complementing the natural surroundings.

🌄 Site-specific Designs – Each of Walling’s designs was tailored specifically to its site. She considered the local climate, soil, and existing vegetation, and designed gardens that created harmony between these factors. When working with historical properties, she ensured that her designs were kept within the character and history of the site.
