As fall fades and frost creeps in, parting with the garden can feel abrupt. But saying goodbye isn’t the only option.

In the November/December issue of American Gardener, Tovah Martin explores what happens when garden plants move indoors for the winter. In “Outdoors In,” she walks through which outdoor plants make good houseguests, how to prepare them for the transition, and why light matters more than almost anything else once they’re inside.

The single most important requirement. A bright window. Plants need as much light as you can give them, ideally right up against the glass. Rotating pots every few weeks helps expose all sides to sunlight and keeps growth balanced through the darker months.

That said, not everything belongs indoors. As Tovah reminds us, expectations matter. Some plants simply aren’t built for life inside. Petunias, for example, struggle with low light and often invite pests once stressed. Knowing what not to bring in is just as important as knowing what will thrive.

The good news. Many familiar garden favorites transition beautifully, (think heuchera, tiarella, grasses, ferns, and more) offering winter-long companionship and a living reminder of the growing season beyond the window.
