*GARDEN TIP OF THE WEEK*

Clay soil and gardening have a love-hate relationship. Great for pottery—not so great for growing. Over the years, we’ve learned that instead of fighting it, we can let plants do some of the heavy lifting.

Add shredded leaves and compost whenever you can, but we also plant deep-rooted and tough crops that push through the clay, open it up, and leave behind air pockets when they decompose. Think of it as root-powered soil tilling.

Here’s what works best in our gardens: daikon radish, potatoes, sweet potatoes, parsnips, beets, sunflowers, beans, and okra. Some are harvested, some are left behind to rot in place (fair warning: radishes can get smelly in winter, but it’s worth it).

Come spring, gently fork everything in, and each season the soil gets looser, richer, and more workable. It’s slow magic, but it works.
