If you’ve ever looked at a potted perennial and wondered why it's sunk two inches below the rim, you're not imagining things. Most potting mixes (especially the fluffy stuff made for annuals) break down fast. And topping off the pot isn’t the answer—burying a plant’s crown can lead to rot.⁠

💡 The fix? Start with the right mix. For long-term container plants, mix in pine-bark fines—they decompose more slowly, keeping your soil structure stable for years. Add a little compost and a slow-release fertilizer, and you’ve got a recipe for happy roots and fewer repotting chores.⁠
