If you’ve ever felt like your garden is more than just a garden—like it’s a creative space, a sanctuary, a muse—you’re in good company. Georgia O’Keeffe’s home in Abiquiú, New Mexico, was all of that and more.⁠

She bought the property in 1945, captivated by the adobe house, the walled garden, and the dramatic desert landscape surrounding it. While she’s often associated with Ghost Ranch (where many of her most famous paintings were created), Abiquiú offered something different—something quieter and more personal.⁠

The garden there wasn’t just for show. O’Keeffe designed it herself and filled it with herbs, fruits, and flowers. It became an extension of her studio—alive, evolving, and deeply woven into her art.⁠

“This house is just another of the odd things I have done in my life,” she once wrote. “It even has a garden all walled in, and it has surprised me to feel what a warming difference it can make in one's life.”⁠

If you’re curious to experience the high desert landscape that shaped her world—up close—the American Horticultural Society is hosting a trip to Santa Fe from August 18-24, 2025.  You’ll visit O’Keeffe’s home and garden, plus explore the flora, fauna, and rich cultural heritage of the Southwest.
