Garden Tip:  The Imposter Rose⁠

Has this ever happened to you? You plant a gorgeous rose, and the next year it comes back looking totally different.⁠
⁠
🌿 Why does this happen?⁠
Most hybrid roses are actually two roses in one:⁠
✨ The variety you chose (called the scion)⁠
✨ A hardy rootstock rose (often with small red flowers)⁠
⁠
After a harsh winter, the scion can die, leaving the rootstock to take over—aka the “imposter rose.”⁠
⁠
👉 How to help prevent it:⁠
✔️ Look for the graft union (the swollen bump low on the stem) and protect it.⁠
✔️ Never mow or cut down to the ground.⁠
✔️ Remove any shoots sprouting from the base.⁠
✔️ In cold climates, mulch over the graft in winter.⁠

💡 Fun Fact:⁠
The most common rootstock is a red-flowered climber called ‘Dr. Huey.’⁠
