GARDEN TIP OF THE WEEK
Growing Trees and Shrubs in Containers (by Request!)

No yard? No problem. Trees and shrubs can thrive in containers—perfect for small spaces, patios, and balconies. Bonus: container-grown plants can be moved without disturbing their roots.

Thinking of trying it? Keep these tips in mind:

Choose a plant that’s hardy—ideally one or two zones tougher than your region, since roots are more exposed in pots.

Compact or dwarf varieties work best, but full-size trees will adapt (and stay smaller) in tight quarters.

Use the biggest outdoor-safe pot you can manage—at least 2–3 times the size of the rootball. Avoid ceramic or terracotta if you get hard freezes.

Use potting soil, not garden soil.

Water frequently—sometimes more than once a day, depending on sun and container size.

Add slow-release fertilizer in spring and mulch the surface to retain moisture.

Pro Tips:
Live in a windy spot? Go for low-profile pots and plants.
Container on pavement? Use a sturdy plant caddy with wheels—it’ll save your back later.
