We couldn’t fit all the bog brilliance into our March/April issue—but some things are too good not to share.⁠

If you read Gail Hudson’s “The World Within a Peat Bog,” you know the Big Bog State Recreation Area in Minnesota is a whole world unto itself. But did you learn what a flark is? Or a strang?⁠
⁠
Swipe to meet the vocabulary of the peatland—terms we had to leave out, but that bring the landscape into sharper focus.⁠
⁠
📖 Bog – An acidic, nutrient-poor wetland dominated by sphagnum moss⁠
🌿 Ovoid island – Tree-covered high ground that rises like an island from the peat⁠
💧 Flark – A shallow, water-filled depression (aka bog puddle) full of aquatic plants⁠
🪵 String (or strang) – A narrow ridge of peat separating flarks like a ribbon⁠
🌊 Water track – A zone where water flows across the bog’s surface, shaping a surreal mosaic of flarks and strings⁠

From above, these elements form fingerlike patterns across the ancient basin once carved by Glacial Lake Agassiz. On the ground, they’re like clues in a mossy mystery.⁠
