Design Studies doctoral student Natalie Wright is making waves as an emerging scholar in material culture. Her standout resume includes curating multiple exhibitions at the Nancy M. Bruce Center for Design and Material Culture, a predoctoral fellowship at the Smithsonian American Art Museum and most recently, being named one of just seven doctoral students nationwide to receive the prestigious Luce/ACLS Dissertation Fellowship.

Her path to UW–Madison was shaped by mentorship—she followed Sarah Anne Carter, her longtime mentor from the Chipstone Foundation Design and Material Culture where Carter is the chair, to Madison when Carter joined the School of Human Ecology as an associate professor of Design Studies and executive director of the Nancy M. Bruce Center for Design and Material Culture.

Wright has gained hands-on curatorial experience, including leading the Rapid Response Mask Collecting Project, an online exhibition documenting early COVID-era face coverings. Her work highlights the power of mentorship, collections-based learning and innovative storytelling in the study of material culture
