A leopard seal giving her best “smile” for the camera. Although in reality, this behavior is less a smile and more a playful challenge to her own reflection in paulnicklen’s camera dome. 

Leopard seals are true evolutionary marvels. Every detail of their anatomy is built for precision hunting and energy efficiency, which is crucial for survival in Antarctica’s icy waters. Their teeth interlock perfectly to grip slippery prey, and they can even regulate blood flow to their extremities. This helps noses, tails, and flippers tolerate lower temperatures by limiting heat loss.

They are also highly inquisitive and expressive, as Paul learned firsthand. This is actually the very seal that tried to feed him penguins for three days straight, which he declined as politely as possible. Her surprising act of generosity made it to natgeo magazine and helped shape the way we understand these intelligent and curious animals.
