The School of Human Ecology is proud to recognize Shiann Her ‘25 (@s.her.03) as the school’s spring 2025 commencement flag bearer. 

Her is a Personal Finance major from Eau Claire, Wisconsin with a certificate in Entrepreneurship. She is the former president of the Human Ecology Financial Occupations Club for Undergraduate Students (@focus_uwmadison), the vice president of resources & operations for the Wisconsin Union Directorate (@wisconsinunion, @wisconsinuniondirectorate) and a student liaison of the Certified Financial Planner (@cfpboardofstandards) board. During the summer of 2024, Her worked as a financial advisor in training intern at Ameriprise Financial (@ameriprise), where she assessed the financial situations of 45 clients, customized portfolio allocations and conducted in-depth phone consultations to develop tailored financial plans.

As a young Hmong woman, Her knows firsthand how inclusive academic and work environments positively impact the sense of belonging and purpose in herself and others. Whether it is for a trip, club experience or conversations held, she is committed to providing a supportive and accepting environment in and outside of the classroom. 

“My favorite parts of the School of Human Ecology are the people and community I’ve found within it,” Her says. “Whether I see a familiar face in the hallway or have small conversations with faculty, these interactions always brighten up my day. I love how approachable and helpful the faculty in the Consumer Science department are, as well as the assistance in the Academic and Career Center—it has made a profound impact on my life, and I wouldn’t be here without those individuals.”

After graduation, Her will move to Minneapolis to work as a client associate at Ameriprise Financial. She hopes to one day create her own wealth management firm and have clients of her own!
