Tuskegee University men’s basketball head coach Benjy Taylor was handcuffed by law enforcement after his team’s loss to Morehouse College on Jan. 31.

Taylor said a group of players from Morehouse’s football team were “acting aggressively” towards the Tuskegee players and their parents during the postgame handshake.

Taylor said he asked police to remove the players because their behavior violated security protocols. Instead, one officer handcuffed him and escorted him off the court.

The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference later fined Morehouse and determined that they did not meet the required security standards for ensuring safety, according to a statement.

“Our historic institutions are expected to provide competitive environments that prioritize the safety, dignity, and mutual respect of student-athletes, coaches, officials, and fans. The conference remains committed to upholding these expectations," said Anthony Holloman, SAIC commissioner.

Taylor hired national civil rights attorney Harry Daniels because of his concerns. Daniels also made a statement in a news release regarding the matter.

“It would be bad for a police officer to treat anyone like this... they need to be held accountable," Daniels said. "Coach Taylor is a good man who did the right thing to protect his team and deescalate a dangerous situation and this officer put him in chains for his troubles.”
