In a recent blog post, Irondale Mayor James Stewart said U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations “tear families apart in Irondale,” and that something must be done.

Stewart, who is the first Black mayor of Irondale, said the federal immigration crackdown has similar effects on community members as racially discriminatory policies has had on Black communities.

“If you don’t understand history, history will end up repeating itself,” Stewart said.

“We have a responsibility to deal with things that are being done wrong in our community, regardless of who it’s affecting.”

Stewart said the city of Irondale will not assist ICE with raids and added that all residents, no matter their immigration status, have access to public safety services.

“We’re going to be just, right and fair. We’re going to do that for every citizen that makes up our community, because at the end of the day, everybody’s human and they should be treated like a human being, regardless if they are a citizen or if they’re not a citizen,” Stewart said.

Stewart said city leadership is planning to conduct a workshop for all public safety employees, including the local police, fire department, court employees and emergency dispatchers, to teach them what to do when confronted by ICE or immigration concerns.

The city is also working with the Alabama Coalition for Immigrant Justice, Stewart said, to host a community discussion clarifying city leadership’s position regarding immigration policies.

U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville, who has been outspoken in his support of ICE operations, responded to Stewart writing in a post on X, “I don’t think the mayor is going to like me very much.”

In January, after an ICE agent shot and killed Minneapolis resident Renee Good amid citywide protests, Tuberville encouraged ICE agents to “shoot back” at civilians.
