At UC San Diego, researchers are reimagining how we prevent mosquito-borne disease by engineering genetic tools that stop transmission before it ever reaches a person. In the School of Biological Sciences, scientists like molecular biologist Omar Akbari are developing new approaches that target the mosquitoes responsible for most malaria transmission, especially as resistance reduces the effectiveness of traditional tools.

Recent discoveries show just how powerful these ideas can be. In 2025, UC San Diego biologists identified a genetic change that prevents the malaria parasite from reaching a mosquito’s salivary glands. The mosquito can still bite, but it can no longer spread the disease.
