#repost southerndst1913  Join us this month as we spotlight HerStory—a celebration of history-making women of the Southern Region. Black history is not confined to the past; it is written every day. For 100 years, the Southern Region has helped write that story. Join us on the road to 100.

Today, we honor Osceola Macarthy Adams, one of the 22 visionary founders of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., born in Albany, Georgia.

A true trailblazer, Osceola Macarthy Adams moved to New York and made history as one of the first Black actresses to perform on Broadway—breaking barriers in an industry that largely excluded Black talent. Beyond the stage, she was a powerful mentor and educator, serving as the director of the Studio Theatre School at the American Negro Theatre and nurturing generations of Black actors.

A fierce advocate for equity, she also served on the Actors’ Equity Association’s Committee on Minority Affairs, working to expand opportunities for Black performers during an era of deep segregation and discrimination.

Today, the Albany Alumnae Chapter is spearheading efforts to install a historical marker on the very property where she was born. Together we celebrate her historic vision and we are honored to share her legacy.
