@matt proxy refuses to stand still. It’s paying off. The 19-year-old Minneapolis artist has been making music since he was 14. Just a few weeks ago, he started uploading archival footage of himself chopping samples to a blank YouTube channel. The channel now has over 12,000 subscribers and half a million views. The videos were from old live stream recordings that documented what he had already been doing for years. That same relentless output defines everything about Matt Proxy: the beats that caught fakemink’s attention off an Instagram reel, his close friendship with his creative partner Adres in Moscow who he found by searching “Hi-C type beat,” the moment JPEGMAFIA told him he was performing in 40 minutes and he didn’t flinch. His upcoming EP ‘Trojan Horse’ closes out what he calls the Horse Trilogy, but it also marks something more personal. His father, recently deported to Liberia after six months in ICE detention, will narrate the project. “I put all my real life into my music,” Proxy tells P&P, and he means it literally. When asked about his influences, he names Adres, his father, his ex-girlfriend, his brothers (and Ye). His art embodies the daily mechanics of survival and creation happening simultaneously.
