Illinois flipped the script on Nebraska on Sunday at Pinnacle Bank Arena, rallying in the second half to defeat the Huskers 78-69 and hand Big Red its second loss of the season.

The result was reflected in this week’s Associated Press Top 25 poll, with Illinois moving ahead of Nebraska as the Huskers slid after back-to-back defeats. Nebraska is now 20-2 overall and 9-2 in Big Ten play. Nebraska fell from its highest-ever ranking of No. 5, down four spots to No. 9.

The Huskers entered last week as one of just three undefeated teams remaining nationally, opening the season with a program-best 20 consecutive wins. That streak ended Tuesday when Michigan edged Nebraska 75-72, handing Big Red its first loss of the season.

Nebraska was without two of its top scorers, Rink Mast and Braden Frager, in the loss to Michigan. Both returned Sunday against Illinois, but it wasn’t enough as the Fighting Illini avenged their December loss to Nebraska in Champaign.

The defeat marked Nebraska’s second straight loss and its first losing streak since March 2025. They look to bounce back against Rutgers on Saturday after a midweek bye.

“They’re playing really well right now,” Nebraska head coach Fred Hoiberg said. “They’re always tough and physical, especially at home. We need to get right, get better this week and have a really tough week of practice.”

“Tuesday is an important day for our guys to recover,” Hoiberg said. “Then we need to have a really good three days heading into the weekend.”

On the women’s side, Nebraska remained outside the AP Top 25 for the second straight week. The Huskers are 16-6 overall and 5-6 in Big Ten play and received 10 votes after going 1-1 last week.

Nebraska defeated Northwestern at home midweek before falling on the road Sunday to top-10 Ohio State.

The schedule doesn’t ease up as the Huskers head back on the road Wednesday to face No. 8 Michigan in Ann Arbor. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. CT.

“We’re just taking one opponent at a time,” Nebraska guard Callin Hake said. “It’s an awesome opportunity to take the show on the road."

"We know they’ll pressure us, so we have to be locked in defensively, handle ball screens better, and finish possessions with box outs, Head Coach Amy Williams said.
