Senior big man Rienk Mast has seen his production slide over the past month. In addition, he is recovering from the flu, an illness that sidelined him for Nebraska’s game against Michigan and sent him to the emergency room with dehydration. “He’s feeling back to himself again,” Nebraska coach Fred Hoiberg said. “He’s been coming in and getting a couple extra workouts, trying to get his lungs burning and get himself back into shape." " Last week was rough, obviously, with the sickness and not being able to play, Rienk Mast said. "That was tough mentally. I'm doing a lot better physically this week.” Mast opened January playing some of his best basketball of the season. In wins over Michigan State and Ohio State, he logged heavy minutes, scored 19 and 12 points, grabbed seven and four rebounds, and shot 40 percent or better from the field. Against Michigan State, he knocked down six 3-pointers, showcasing the shooting range that makes him a matchup problem. Since then, the numbers have dipped. Over the past six games, Mast has scored in single digits five times. His field-goal percentage has fallen below 30 percent, and his 3-point percentage sits at 18 percent, including two games without a made 3. In Nebraska’s loss to Illinois, Mast finished with five points on 2-of-10 shooting in 26 minutes. Despite the downturn, Nebraska remains confident Mast will regain his form. “The discipline and the work that he puts in — he’s going to get it going again,” Hoiberg said. “There’s no doubt in my mind. He’s too good a shooter.” Mast’s importance goes beyond scoring. He ranks among Nebraska’s top three players in minutes, points, assists, and rebounds, and his versatility on both ends of the floor is central to the Huskers’ identity. Hoiberg has repeatedly said Nebraska’s ceiling is tied closely to Mast’s performance. Nebraska enters the weekend 20–2 overall and 9–2 in Big Ten play, ranked ninth nationally, after going 0–2 last week. Rutgers is 9-14 overall, 2–10 in conference play, but both of the Scarlet Knights’ league wins have come at home, where they have played more competitively. Rutgers’ physical interior defense puts added emphasis on Mast’s rebounding, efficiency and overall activity as Nebraska looks to get back on track. “Big Ten games, no matter who you play, are tough,” Mast said. “I think our guys know that. We’ll be ready. One game at a time.” Hoiberg also noted that redshirt freshman Braden Frager, who scored 20 points against Illinois after returning from an ankle injury, had a strong week of practice and is expected to be available Saturday. Hoiberg also mentioned senior Forward Ugnius Jarusevicius is most likely being shut down for the season due to a lingering back injury. They will probably look for a medical red shirt for him.
