When I was nine, my family flew from Nevada to New York for my first visit. It was July — sweltering, sticky, and a shock for a desert kid used to dry heat. We had the classic checklist: countless museums, the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, long walks through Central Park. But my dad had one non-negotiable — a stay at the Waldorf Astoria. I still remember how excited he was at check-in, listing off its famous guests (most of whom I didn’t recognize at the time) and me asking the only question that mattered: “Can we jump on the bed?” (Answer: No.)

I moved to New York just before the Waldorf closed in 2017 for its eight-year renovation, and I hadn’t stepped inside since I was nine. Still, every time I passed its proud Art Deco facade on Park Avenue, I’d find myself wondering: What was happening inside? How would she dazzle us next?

Last Thursday, I finally got my answer. The waldorfnyc reopened with a grand soirée worthy of its legacy — every hallway, ballroom, gilded mirror, and tiled artwork humming with music, dancing, cocktails, black-tie glamour and pure revelry.

Naturally, when I laid my head on my pillow that night, the music still drifting in my ears, I sent my dad a video from the evening — along with a playful note that yes, I may have jumped on the bed this time (carefully, of course).

Thank you to the waldorfnyc team for having me — and welcome back to your rightful place as the home of luxury in New York. waldorfastoria
