Today, on the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation, Trinity College Dublin joins the international community in acknowledging the ongoing impact of FGM on women and girls, and in supporting efforts to bring about its prevention and eventual end.

On this day, Trinity recognises the work of Ifrah Ahmed, LL.D, a Somali-Irish human rights advocate, educator, social entrepreneur, and honorary degree recipient. Ifrah has dedicated her life to supporting the global effort to end Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C), a form of gender-based violence that she survived as a child. Recognised internationally as a violation of the human rights of women and girls, FGM/C continues to affect more than 200 million women and girls worldwide.

Having arrived in Dublin in 2006 after fleeing the Somali civil war, Ifrah became deeply involved in community advocacy in Ireland, working alongside policymakers, civil society organisations, and community groups. Her advocacy played a significant role in the introduction of legislation criminalising FGM in Ireland, which came into effect in 2012.

Through the Ifrah Foundation, established in 2010, Ifrah has since led programmes in Somalia focused on prevention, education, and community-led change. In 2021, the Foundation launched the Dear Daughter Campaign in partnership with UNFPA Somalia, inviting parents and caregivers to publicly pledge to protect their daughters from FGM/C. To date, more than 100,000 such pledges have been made.

Ifrah was the first woman to publicly share her experience of FGM/C at the United Nations in 2010, helping to bring global attention to the issue. Through education, collaboration and survivor-centred advocacy, her work continues to support safeguarding, dignity, and lasting change for women and girls.
